Yesterday I ventured in to the city.

I went with these two beauties-- and there was blue sky!

We ate thai food.

We did a little shopping.

We ate fresh mint ice-cream outside (from Eat local).

Oh, and then we had a meeting.

{Pssst! That's Penny Simkin. Author. Doula. Childbirth educator. (With 45 years of experience!!!!) Teacher at Seattle Midwifery. Simply put- she's one of my heroes. What a kind soul she is. I'm doing some work on reformatting my childbirth classes and her expertise is vast and valuable. For 90 minutes she graciously answered my questions and encouraged me. I was a little star-struck sitting there in her living room!}

And then we went home.

Not bad for a Monday!

Hair tutorial

I've been dragging my feet on this post. I'm not writing this because I think I have great hair, or because I think everyone should try and be like me. I'm only doing it because so many of you have asked me to, and I want to be helpful. Okay? Okay. Whew. Glad we got that out of the way.

The other problem? The lighting in my bathroom is horrible. There is very little natural light. So, black and whites mostly okay?

Let's start here:

I have super thick, coarse, naturally wavy hair. My beloved Mikelle has to thin and deep point cut my mop every six weeks. She texturizes and trims along with giving me some blonde/strawberry highlights. She is seriously one of my most favorite people in the world. I would be lost without her!

If I just let my hair air-dry it will be wavy and frizzy-- that's the natural state of things. Ugh. Sometimes I straighten it. Sometimes I scrunch it up and make it curly. A lot of the time I sleep on it wet and I wake up looking cray-zay.

Most times I start with hair that is still a little wet. I flip over and dry it upside-down for volume. I use my fingers and also a flat brush to get the frizzies out.

Then, I use some sort of smoothing product to do just that- smooth, and also to protect against heat damage (coming next).

I use this. It is not a curling iron. It is a wand, and I think it produces a much more natural looking curl/wave. Be sure that you get the 1 1/2" barrel. Read: the bigger the better!

You just twist your hair around it and hold. Careful! It's hot. (It comes with a glove which I NEVER use.). You can do big chunky waves by using big sections of hair and twirling it looser (quick), or you make more springy curls by taking smaller sections of hair and twirling it tighter (takes longer). I usually do bigger sections underneath. And a few tighter curls on top.

Just work your way all the way around. I don't hold the hair on the iron for very long. Maybe 5 seconds? Make sure you get all the pieces underneath, and check the back.

My whole head is done. Great. Now it's time to mess it up.

Flip over and shake it out. Run your fingers through it a little.

I pull and tug on the curls a little. Honestly, I think it looks best if I sleep on it for a night. The curls relax and it looks soft and wavy. Bed head is sexy anyways right? (Just be sure you brush your teeth :) I do spray it just a little with a light hairspray.

There you have it. That's it. Questions?
